Tai chi for everyone

Tai chi is a martial art practiced for both defense training and its many health benefits. Today, tai chi is studied and practiced worldwide. Most modern styles of tai chi trace their development to at least one of the five traditional schools. The five traditional schools are: Chen, Yang, Wu/Hao, Wu and Sun. Beginners and Intermediate classes at Tai Chi For Life are taught in the Yang style.
Tai chi classes are held at several community centers in the Vancouver Regional District. Beginners to advanced classes are taught by Teruko Ueda. Teruko has more than twenty years experience in martial arts and fifteen teaching tai chi. You can preview the different forms and levels of tai chi Teruko teaches by clicking beginners, intermediate and sword on the menu bar above. You must register early for classes because they fill up very quickly.
Teruko incorporates Qigong into her tai chi classes. "Qigong is the philosophy and practice of aligning breath, physical activity and awareness for mental, spiritual and corporeal health, as well as the development of human potential." Many forms of martial arts include the development of chi, or vital energy, and it is a vital part of Teruko's teaching and practice.

Qigong was probably developed in China during the Liang Dynasty (circa 502-557 A.D.) in the Shaolin Temple. When Shaolin monks trained using Qigong, they found they could not only improve their health but they could also increase the power of their martial arts techniques. Students of tai chi find similar benefits.
